The United Nations World Food Program (UN-WFP) partnered and help fund a series of week long trainings on Geographical Information Systems (GIS) for Regional and Provincial participants. Concentrating on Climate and Disaster Risk and Vulnerability Reduction, the activity is in support of DILG's program on Enhancing LGU Capacity on DRR and CCA.
The training shall provide the participants with background knowledge, practical experience and hands-on skills in the application of Quantum GIS (QGIS) which is a vital tool for planning towards building their own capacity for climate and disaster risk reduction.
An initial training for Regional DILG participants on QGIS was held from July 8-12, 2013 with about fifty six (56) DILG Regional and Central Office personnel in attendance. Mr. Juanito "Noy" Berja, Jr., GIS Specialist from the UN-WFP was the main resource person and was ably supported by the Laguna PPDO staff who acted as facilitators during the training.
After the initial conduct of the course, a two (2) school Provincial TOT will be conducted tentatively in August. All training activities shall be held at the LGATC, Los Banos, Laguna. Consequently the GIS Training shall be rolled out to all LGUs in the 18 MRBs. Regional participants trained during the TOT shall assist the WFP train Provincial participants during the provincial training. LGA plans to expand the implementation of the project to non-MRB LGUs in the future.
